The congress of educators of the deaf held in Milan, Italy recommended that the oral method was the most effective way of teaching deaf children.
Sumner Deaf and Dumb Institution opened.Gerrit van Asch was appointed principal. Oral teaching promoted, sign language strictly forbidden.

Originally called Sumner School for the Deaf it was renamed in 1995 after its first Principal Gerrit van Asch.
The Centre works in partnership with parents, the Deaf Community, teachers and other professionals supporting deaf and hearing-impaired students on site and in the Central Southern Regions of New Zealand
